Unlock the Way Forward is an Objective in the Raid: The Last Wish in Destiny 2.

Readers - Look at the Mechanism in the middle and call out the symbols shown for the corresponding room
Cleanser/Roamer - Clear the Taken that will continually appear throughout the encounter. Run between the rooms to deposit the approach Umbral Energy to the appropriate symbol.

This is a puzzle encounter that needs to be solved.
While there is no boss, there is still a wipe mechanic for making too many mistakes while trying to solve The Vault.
There are hordes of enemies as well that need to be dealt with throughout.
Off the main chamber with the large device are 3 rooms.
Decide on the callouts for each of the rooms BEFORE starting the encounter and be sure everyone knows which one is which.
Example Callouts:
- Entrance/Stairs: Where you entered the Vault
- Rock/Pillar: Room with the Stone Pillar in the middle
- Forest/Tree: Room with the tree inside it.
Each of these room link to each other via a passage off to the side, going in a circle between the entrance and the other room adjacent to it.

Those Guardians who've taken on Reading the mechanism need to step onto the plates in front of the Mechanism to start the encounter.
The machine will rotate and just above you, symbols will be displayed.
This will also start the Vault Security Mechanism, the Wipe timer!
The pattern for the symbols will always be the same: 1 in the left, 1 in the middle, and 1 on the right.
Now the puzzle begins.
Set of the readers to ALWAYS go first, then the next, then the third.
- Ex: Entrance Reader Begins, then the Pillar Reader goes, then the Tree Reader goes.
They will read off the symbol they have in the middle.
Listen to what they read off, and then look for the same symbol on the display in front of you.
The symbol will be the same for the display, but in a different position.
The Reader with the same symbol calls out that they have it and if it is on the left or right of the display.
Now, this reader who just made the call out needs to make one of their own, saying what Symbol they have in the middle.
The final Reader should have this symbol on their display.
Once again, this final Reader needs to state where the symbol is on their display.
Finally, they call out the symbol in the middle of their display.
The first reader likely has this symbol sitting on their display on one side, they call out the side the matching symbol appears on.

What does all this mean?

Each of the plates that has a matching symbol on the left-hand side will need a cleanse from Taken Essence Penumbra.
Each of the Plates with a matching symbol on the right-hand side will need a cleanse from Taken Essence Antumbra

During the Cleansing

Now the readers hold the central area.
You will need to stay on guard for the Might of Riven that will appear periodically.
Kill these will extreme prejudice, because they are trying to stand on your plate and trigger a wipe!

With the symbols read, its time to put all that information to use.
The left and right orientation of the symbols tells you what kind of Cleanse the symbol will need.
If it's on the left, you will need to cleanse it from the left-hand side (Penumbra).
If it's on the right, you will need to cleanse it from the right-hand side (Antumbra).
Now, access to two of the rooms will be sealed, while the third remains open.
Those who aren't readers will run into the room and start killing the Taken until an Eye of Riven spawns.
Defeating them will drop a Taken Essence which will either give you Taken Essence Penumbra or Taken Essence Antumbra
The Readers in the middle of the room will see the sealed rooms shift, and one will be open.
The Readers need to call this room out for the Cleanser.
The Cleanser now need to head through the chambers using the connecting pathway.
Once there, head for the Plate with the first matching symbol.
Use your grenade button to activate the cleanse (if that doesn't work, use your Super Command).
This will need to be repeated until each plate has been cleansed once to complete the first round.
This entire process will need to be completed twice more to unlock the mechanism and open the way forward.
